Several Thoughts on Solid Insulated Ring Main Units (Part 1)

(1) Solid insulating materials: In actual operation, due to the complexity and uncertainty of the environment, we need to carefully consider issues such as aging, moisture absorption, insulation, and heat generation of epoxy resin. Meanwhile, during the manufacturing process, we must strictly review and control the production technology level and process flow of solid poles. Otherwise, the insulation hazards, failure probability, and harmfulness of solid insulated ring main units (RMUs) may be higher than those of SF₆ gas-insulated RMUs.
(2) Cavity sealing issue: For isolating switches and earthing switches relying on air insulation, we must properly address the sealing of the corresponding pole cavities. Otherwise, problems such as condensation caused by poor sealing will significantly reduce the insulation performance of the switches, leading to accidents like switch failures.
(3) Coating of conductive or semi-conductive shielding layers on the surface of solid poles: It is understood that currently, manufacturers mainly use the following methods for coating the surface of solid poles: zinc spraying, aluminum spraying, semi-conductive paint coating, or semi-conductive rubber wrapping. Simply applying the coating without prior analysis, simulation, and testing may result in uneven electric field distribution, unstable partial discharge, and other phenomena. This will reduce the insulation performance of solid insulated RMUs and cause accidents. Therefore, we must exercise extreme caution in coating the surface of solid insulated RMUs, conduct in-depth analysis and research, and ensure true reliability. Otherwise, the result will be counterproductive.
